After the National Unity Government (NUG) broke its promises several times on cabinet, the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of the Parliament) has now strongly warned to make its final decision using the legislative authority if the cabinet nominees were not introduced tomorrow.
In a meeting last week with the Parliament members, the government asked for one week to resolve the issue, a timeframe ending tomorrow on Tuesday.
“They told us to introduce the cabinet in one week and it is ending tomorrow,” Speaker Abdul Raouf Ibrahimi said. “If it is not solved tomorrow, the assembly will make its final decision following its legislative authorities.”
While, Mohammad Mohaqiq, the deputy chief executive, told TOLOnews that the NUG leaders, President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah, have agreed on key points of the cabinet including the ethnic quotas.
He added the nominees would be introduced soon to the Parliament for a vote of confidence.
“The ethnic-based composition of the cabinet has been finalized and it will be announced soon,” Mohaqiq said.
However, Ashraf Ghani had clearly said that the cabinet members would be appointed based on skills and qualification not on ethnicity basis.
But according to reports, Ghani and Abdullah have agreed on nine seats for Pashtun, eight for Tajik, three for Hazara, two for Uzbek and one for Sadat ethnicities. Also, one seat has been considered for Hindu community.
This comes as yesterday, the civil society groups warned to call on the citizens to take to the streets if the controversial cabinet was not formed in two days.
